A Little About Our Journey

The reason for this site is very simple:

Our precious little Kelsey is embarking on another incredible journey and we want to be able to keep all the people that she has touched informed on her progress.  I will also show how God has touched our lives and kept Himself in the forefront of our struggle

Kelsey has been diagnosed with Arnold Chiari Malformation Type I.  This is somewhat of a rare condition, found predominantly in women between the ages of 18-35.  The reason for the age group is because most patients do not begin experiencing symptoms until that age.

For Kelsey, however, her symptoms began almost from birth.  The condition can be summed up by saying her brain is too large for her skull.  Technically, the cerebral tonsils are herniated below the cranium and extending down into the spinal column.  The resulting effect is excessive pressure is being placed on the brain stem / spinal cord leading to a multitude of neurological side effects.  The most dangerous symptom and the one that has prompted the surgeries is sleep apnea and bradycardia events.  Many people suffer from apnea, but the pressure place on Kelsey’s brain stem results in extended apnea events, lasting from 30 – 60 seconds and as frequently as 50 per night.

That is a very, very brief overview of the condition we are dealing with.  As you read more about our journey, you will see terms and phrases commonly associated with this condition and you will understand more about it.  I, as the moderator and father, do not understand much about it.

Thank you for stopping by and keeping up with Kelsey.  I will be sure to tell her you came by, and if you leave a comment, I will be sure to read it to her.

God Bless,

Anson Kanoy

  5. Anson, I may not have a lot of time to be on the internet until Monday so I wanted to let you know that even if you don’t hear from me, you will all still be in my thoughts and prayers. I am blessed to be a witness to all that God is doing in your lives and to His glory. Give Kelsey a kiss for me and let Callie know how proud we all are of her as well. I know this has to be stressful for her as well. Am glad to read that she is adjusting well. May God continue to be Nicole’s and your strenght and fortress in this storm.

  8. Hello Kanoy Family,

I met Nicole in Georgia while we lived there from 2004-2006. We home educate my children and we are also good friends with Tracey and Ed Pace. Tracey let me know about Kelsey and this website. I write to let you know that our family (now in Virginia, and I am originally from NY) are praying for all of you! We praise God for what He is doing in your lives and thank you for the encouragement you are to us, as you praise Him through this journey. Finally, I would like to leave you with a scripture: “The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of troubles. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee. Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people His doings.” Psalm 9:9-11

The Lord bless thee and keep thee!

  10. Hi Kanoy Family

I am writing to let you know that my family and church family is praying for your beautiful little girl (Kelsey). I know God work miracles. For the Lord God is your refuge in the times of troubles, and if you know his name and you put your trust in him, the Lord will not forsake those that seek him. I am telling you this because on Feb. 22, 2008, my little girl (Miracle Faith Mikell 3yrs. old) was diagnosed with Stage III Burkitts Lyphoma-Cancer. Through all of the 5 surgeries she had to have in a month of March, God have really worked a true miracle in our lives. So continue to hang in there. We all love you and are continuing to pray for Kelsey, mom and dad.

  11. How beautiful your faimly is! I came upon your site and was amazed at the journey you and Nicole have been thru with Kelsey. Isn’t God good “all” the time. I know he will continue to heal her and strengthen you both throughout this. Also good to hear you both have a very supportive church. My family is growing leaps and bounds, we are adding a new little one (boy) to our bunch in June. Take care,
    Kristi

  12. Hey Anson,
what an amazing story. It is so great to see the pictures of you and your family. They are just beautiful. Tell Kelsey that she is just the prettiest angel I have ever seen. I will be praying for you and your family. Stay strong and take care,
    Chaney

  13. Hello Kanoy family,

I stopped by to check up on Kelsey’s progress. I’m a part of Effingham Christian Homeschool Organization (ECHO) and a prayer request was shared with us before the surgery. I added her to our church prayer list (Woodlawn Bapt. Church in Garden City) and have had several requests for an update. God bless you and keep you!

  14. Anson,

Let me just start by saying hello. Your girls are all beautiful. I have been sitting here reading your story and just marvelling at what a wonderful Dad you have become. It is amazing what 13 years can do isn’t it? I am going to put Kelsey on our prayer list. I will definetly be keeping up with her journey. Tell her that an old friend said hello.

  15. Thanks for the update. One of our church prayer warriors has been asking me without fail about Kelsey. I’m going to print out the latest and take it to church to share. A belated Happy Birthday Kelsey and many returns of the day!

  16. God bless you all. I attend Woodlawn Baptist Church, where Kathy Barefoot asked us to pray for Kelsey. It is an honor to lift her and the entire family to the throne of heaven. Please tell Kelsey that we are praying for her.

  17. Anson and Nicole,

Erica and I are thinking about you. Your faith and your strength is inspiring. Thank you for sharing your life wife us-
